My Interview with Jacqueline Shepherd on BBC

My Interview with Jacqueline Shepherd on BBC

Dear Diary,

I had the privilege of sitting down with Jacqueline Shepherd on BBC London to talk about my book, Who Helps The Helpline, When The Helpline Needs HELP?

It was more than just an interview. It was a real, heartfelt conversation about things I know you understand.
I’ve spent many, many years trying to bring attention to the silent struggles of our carers, first responders, and those who serve others every day.
We also spoke about the month-long book signing I’ve been doing at John Lewis; meeting so many people from all different cultures, nationalities and races is opening my eyes even further that the struggles of life cares no bounds.

Jacqueline asked me about my book in depth, I told her that my book is about the ones who hold everyone else up, but have nowhere to turn when it’s their turn to fall.
Whether it’s burnout, compassion fatigue, or the weight of unresolved trauma, the emotional toll is real and too often ignored. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. That’s why this message matters so much to me.

Jacqueline also asked what advice I would give to those struggling over the winter and festive period. Here’s what I shared:

1. Stay Connected
“This is the season when loneliness can hit hardest. Even one message, one phone call, one event can shift your mood.”

2. Stick to a Routine
“The darker days can throw us off. Try to keep some structure. Eat at regular times, get out for some fresh air, even if it’s just a quick walk.”

3. Practise Gratitude
“Every day, I try to find at least one good thing. It can be small. But it adds up. Gratitude has a quiet power.”

4. Lower the Pressure
“Don’t get caught up in the ‘perfect holiday’. Say no when you need to. Focus on what truly matters to you.”

5. Ask for Help
“There’s no shame in speaking to someone. Counsellors, therapists, these are lifelines. Use them. You’re worth it.”

My Vision for Mental Health Support

I believe mental health should never be a luxury or an afterthought.
Dairy, we need a system that works for everyone. Not just when things go wrong, but before they do. That means prevention, education, and easier access to real, meaningful support.
I’m constantly pushing back against the red tape and outdated attitudes that stop people from getting the help they need, especially professionals and frontline workers. Mental health help isn’t just about recovery. It’s about respect, safety, and support.

The John Lewis book signing has been really important to me. People have travelled from all over. Some brought their book for me to sign. Others just wanted to talk.
They told me things they hadn’t shared with anyone. That’s what this is about, human connection, the freedom to be, and honest conversations.

God, I am truly grateful for every person who’s shown up. Without you, nothing is possible, It tells me my work matters.

Love Kevin.
